Cape Breton Smile Males an Impression. Come Check It Out First Hand, You Will Be Glad You Did!!!!

Here is a letter written to the Editor on July 16th, about the production Cape Breton Smile which is taking place in Baddeck at the Inverary Inn from July 15 to July 31. This letter says it all. After reading the praise for this tremendous production of visual and musical event, you will definitely want to take it in.

July 16, 2014

Letter to the Editor

It is no secret that music is a plenty during the summer months in Cape Breton. However, there is a show running in Baddeck this summer that is unlike anything I have seen. I highly recommend it to all and I’ll explain why. The recipe consists of 3 of the Barra MacNeils, Kevin Evans (of Evans & Doherty), Jennifer Whalen, and Bob Quinn. The show is brilliantly put together. It is thoughtful, touching, and inclusive. It is truly a breath of fresh air on the Cape Breton music scene. The show celebrates Cape Breton like never before. Among those celebrated are our many fiddlers, our veterans, Johnny Miles, Alexander & Mabel Graham Bell, Rita and John Allan (no last names required).

There are moments that will leave you breathless and others that will invoke a memory or a tear. You will learn something new and you will be grateful. The multimedia presentation that accompanies the music has been tweaked to perfection, carefully chosen and filled with the wonder that is ours.

There is no better place than in the presence of the pen and piano of Bob Quinn. Jennifer Whalen evokes tender memories with her sweet voice. Stewart MacNeil truly shows his vocal prowess, while his brother Boyd skillfully accompanies other fiddlers. Lucy MacNeil never ceases to surprise me and amaze me, both as a fiddler and vocalist. And then, there’s Kevin Evans. I have been a fan of Kevin’s for a long time. However, last night, like a fine wine, I heard a voice that as perfected itself with time. It’s one thing to hear Kevin in a noisy pub. It’s quite another to hear him in such a venue as the Convention Centre of the Inverary Inn in Baddeck. His tribute to the Cape Breton Highlanders will move you. Of this, I am sure.

The show runs all summer. Please vistit www.capebretonsmile.com for times and ticket info. And do come a bit early to catch a fine meal in one of Baddeck’s many restaurants.

This show celebrates Cape Breton like no other. Besides all of the above, there are surprises! I highly recommend the drive to Baddeck.  We’ve known that our island is a wonder to behold. This gifted team will take you places you’ve never been : visually and musically.  I’ll be returning. I hope to see you there.

Delores Boudreau
