Richmond County Skating Club's Year End Show a Success!

Skaters come out for finale at Richmond Skate.

Texas Rockers pose for photo before taking to the ice.

Figure Skaters from the Richmond Skating Club Show Their Style.

February 24th, The Richmond County Skating Club hosted their year end Ice-Capades. It is amazing to see how the young skaters have progressed during their first year of the Can Skate Program and just how good the more advanced figure skaters who have been skating with the club for a few years actually are. This event was the major fundraiser for the skating club and it was great to see the turn out of parents, grandparents and relatives and friends that turned out to support the skating program. The skaters ranged from the very young beginners who were adorable in their customes and performed delightly as their skating coaches led them through their routines, to the more seasoned figure skaters who ran in age from 7 to teen aged skaters and wowed the audience with their precision skating program. I can easily imagine what it would be like to attend the Olympics and see someone you know receive a Medal as the pride in our young skaters shined in every parent or grand parent as their young skaters received a medal for their performance on Friday. The club did a marvelous job perparing for the event and should be congratulated for their hard work.

View of Richmond

The Bras d’Or Lakes Inn was the location for a meeting with Harvey Sawler, an independent consultant, who has been hired by the Department of Tourism, Culture and Economic Development for the Municipality of Richmond to come up with a new tourism brand for St. Peter’s. Sawler has worked with the Departments of Tourism in both PEI and New Brunswick in marketing and development as well as consultant for Destination Cape Breton Association. Tourism operators were invited by the Municipality to come out an express their ideas as to what the area had as a drawing agent for visitors. The consensus among the 20 operators present was the importance of the Bras d’Or Lake, especially now that it has been designated as an UNESCO Biosphere Site. The St. Peter’s Canal was also mentioned as an important sight that approximately 40,000 visitors stop off in the village to see, as well as our music, the fact that the village itself was a service area, where visitors can find a variety of excellent shops, museums, marina and restaurants which offer a variety of levels from family fair to one of the finest gourmet restaurants on the island, as well as essentials such as a service station, post office, bank and grocery and liquor stores and pharmacies. Although the area has a lot of attractions in the area that are of interest to the visitor, the main objective is to find that one aspect in the area that will stand out and entice visitors to pick St. Peter’s. Sawler will be holding one on one meetings with interested tourism operators to gather more information before he completes his report for the municipality.

A meeting was also held earlier in the day in Isle Madame with the same scenario to find their drawing card and then build on that. After speaking with members of the tourism industry in Isle Madame to see what had been accomplished at their meeting, the consensus was that, of all the attractions that the island has to offer, the one factor that would make the island stand out was their coastline. Isle Madame is rich in coastline which surrounds several communities, although the one obstacle was making sure the visitor could gain access to the coastline. Sawler will also be doing one on one meetings with operators on the island before submitting his full report in 4-6 weeks.

Come Celebrate St. Patrick's Day At The Bras d'Or Lakes Inn

Great news for St. Patrick's Day lovers, February has been long to say the least but with March finally here, we now have something to celebrate. If you come from an Irish background as I do, you have probably grown up listening and enjoying Irish music and making sure that you had something green to wear on St. Patrick's Day. This year you can look forward to attending the sixth Annual St. Patrick's Day party at the Bras d'Or Lakes Inn, with lots of great music and excellent food. Here is the information on the St. Patrick's Day event as forwarded to me by Greg Silvers.

St. Patrick's Day event in St Peter's
Hello traditional music fans.

This year is our sixth to host the annual St. Patrick's Day party in St. Peter's - the biggest live traditional session of the year in these parts, featuring an acoustic jam with dozens of players, in the very amiable surroundings of the Bras d'Or Lakes Inn. As always, players, singers, dancers and listeners are welcome.

This year's celebration will be a tribute to Paul Davis, in honour of the 30th Anniversary of his weekly radio show, The Music of Ireland. After producing 1,560 hour-long shows, Paul definitely deserves to be roasted and toasted by his friends and fans.

Please join us in St. Peter's on Saturday, March 17, from 5 pm, with the meal starting at 7pm and followed with a Jam session. Tickets can be purchased in advance from Rhoda or Jean Pierre at the Bras d'Or Lakes Inn and cost $17.25 including taxes.

Chef JP Gillet has planned a very nice supper of your choice of either Corned Beef and Cabbage or Coq au vin. Reservations and advance tickets are required as this is a private function at the Inn. Seating is limited as always, so book early to avoid disappointment, and reserve a table for your party if you wish.

The attached invitation has further information on the event, meal and price.

Anyone who would like to make public remarks for Paul during the supper is encouraged. I'd appreciate hearing from any of you in advance to answer your questions and to schedule your toast or roast into the evening. My contact info
appears at the end of this message.

Information From Commodore of the Wallace MacAskill Yacht Club

I have just received this information from Greg Silvers, Commodore of the Wallace MacAskill Yacht Club in St. Peter's. It is for all those of you in the boating community, and it includes some very handy information, so I am passing it along.

Hello Sailors

I've just had some correspondence with Colin Jackson at Dobson YC, who has put up a web site that will be very useful for us and any sailing visitors to the Cape Breton Island.
They have some of the good info such as chartlets, from the now out-of-print Cape Breton Cruising Guide, available as pdf downloads; tides and currents, weather links, etc etc. It all so very handy and a good start to a comprehensive resource for the boating community.
Colin is seeking input from the Cape Breton sailing community to add up-to-date information.
Suggest all of you check out this site, and share any local knowledge you have for posting on their site.

http://www.cruising-cape-breton.info

And....

For any past members of Wallace MacAskill YC who did not receive a notice, we are meeting next on Saturday, Feb 18, at 11 am, at the Bras d'Or Lakes Inn, St. Peter's. If you'd like to join us please let me know in advance if possible. We are always interested in renewing old members, and welcoming new ones.

Regards,

Greg Silver

Tourism in Richmond County

Tourism in Richmond County
By
Ann Marie Yorke

February is here, and this year we will be celebrating with an extra
day in the month. It is a leap year, which could be good or bad
depending on how you look at it. Traditionally February, although
shorter than other winter months, could be one of the coldest months
of winter. Lots of people watched on February 2nd to see if the
groundhog would see its shadow, and apparently we are in for an early
Spring. I am not sure how accurate the groundhog's prediction is, but
here in Cape Breton, I can tell you from years of looking forward to
an early Spring, that we probably will have quite a few winter days
ahead. For those who enjoy the cool crisp days of winter and the
opportunity to get out and do some snowshoeing, cross country skiing
or just out taking a hike, they should still have plenty of time to
partake in these activities. For those who don't enjoy vigorous
outdoor activities, but like to take in some of the community events,
Richmond has just what the doctor ordered. Richmond County's Winter
Festival will be hosting some great outdoor events.
On February 8th, come to Centre La Picasse for a free afternoon of
games for children under 12 years of age from 6 to 7:30pm, there will
be prizes awarded. Starting at 12pm on February 9th, there will be a
Pot Luck Luncheon held at the Riverdale Community Center in Lower
River. On February 11 there will be a Valentine Kitchen Party held at
the Framboise Community Centre from 9pm until 12 midnight. This event
is for 19 years of age and over and admission is by donation. On
February 12th, there will be a Merchandise Bingo starting at 2pm, held
at the Riverdale Community Centre in Lower River. Also on February 12
there will be a Brunch held at the Tara Lynne Community Centre in
River Bourgeois from 10:30am until 1pm. There will also be a
Hungryman’s Breakfast from 8am until 11am, held at the D’Escousse Hall
.
Until next week, enjoy the good times in Richmond County

Dorothy's Pet's In-Need Flea Market February 11th, In River Bourgeois

Richmond County is very lucky to have Dorothy's Pets In Need, where cats are able to be placed until they find a home. At the moment Dorothy has 30 plus cats at the shelder where they are fed and housed. This information has just come to my attention on a fundraising Flea Market for Pets In-Need to be held on February 11th and so I am passing it along to all animal lovers, lets help Dorothy with her valuable work of protecting and finding loving homes for these cats.

One of the most successful musical groups of the 1970s, brother and sister duo, the Carpenters, introduced a unique and inimitable sound that changed the world of popular music forever. With their brief recording career spanning just over a decade, Richard Carpenter’s knack for musical arrangements combined with Karen’s haunting vocals created a sound that continues to captivate listeners to this day. This tribute features the vocals of Laurel Martell, a performer who fell in love with the Carpenters at the age of eleven. Her warm vocals and passion for their music draws audiences in with a performance that is truly personal. Laurel is backed by a talented group of local musicians assembled and directed by studio owner (Lakewind Sound) and multiple East Coast Music Award winner, Fred Lavery. Aaron Lewis (Carlton Showband, Three Pianos, Privateers), Richard Burke (Cape Breton Summertime Revue, Dream A Little Dream of Me), Allie Bennett (Dave Gunning, Anne Murray, JP Cormier), Dave McKeough (Ennis Sisters, Jimmy Rankin, Matt Minglewood), Stephen Muise (Men of the Deeps, Three Pianos, Privateers), and Jennifer Sheppard (Accents, Zodiac), Come together to pay homage to the intricate arrangements, subtle nuances and complex harmonies that are signature to the Carpenter sound. Come out and enjoy an evening of music celebrating some of the sweetest sounds the world has ever known.
