Highland Village celebrates Oidhche Shamhna-Halloween

Highland Village celebrates Oidhche Shamhna - Halloween

The Highland Village in Iona will soon celebrate one of its favourite days on the Gaelic calendar - Oidhche Shamhna, or Halloween. For three nights October 24-26, the Highland Village brings to life stories and superstitions through its Oidhche nam Bòcan/Night of the Spooks program.

Oidhche nam Bòcan, features a special evening stroll through the Highland Village by lamp light, complete with costumed guides, stories, skits and memorable interactions. Highland Village personnel and volunteers work hard to introduce new story lines and surprises every year. This year there are some fun twists that the whole family will enjoy.

There will be short skits as you enter a number of the buildings in small groups. The action will focus on some of the old Gaelic superstitions and there will be some encounters along the way between buildings as well. This is a wonderful way to experience some of the old Halloween traditions.

The tour is followed by a céilidh in "The Tuning Room" with fuarag, oatcakes and more. This is an experience for the whole family. Prepaid reservations are required. Tickets are $12 per adult, $28 per family, or $5 per student. The program runs from 7 each 9 pm each evening.

For more information contact us (Toll free)1-866-442-3542 or e-mail highlandvillage@gov.ns.ca.

Cape Breton Potato Soup- Nothing Better To Warm You Up On A Cold Fall Day! Delicious.

Potato Soup

On a cold fall or winter day there is nothing better to take that nip out of the air than a delicious bowl of homemade soup. I must admit I am a soup lover, and so I want to share with you this recipe that I came across for potato soup. I hope you enjoy it.

Potato Soup

5 cups potatoes, peeled and chopped
1/4 cup onions, chopped
2 cups water
1 teaspoon salt
1 dash pepper
1/2 teaspoon dried parsley
3 tablespoons flour
8 slices bacon
2 1/2 cups milk
4 chicken bouillon cubes

Combine potatoes, onions and water in a boiling pan.  Bring to a boil. Add bouillon cubes, parsley, salt and pepper.  Cook, covered, for 20 minutes or until tender.Meanwhile, cook bacon and drain off fat and set aside. Combine 1 cup of milk and flour.  Add to soup.  Simmer until thick, stirring constantly. Add remaining milk. Heat until hot.  Crumble bacon over top and serve. This would be great served up with homemade rolls straight from the oven drizzled with butter. Enjoy!

The Magicial Season of Christmas is quickly approaching, and if you have been looking for one of the sought after Elf on A Shelf creations I maybe able to help you out!

I love Christmas and all the holiday traditions that goes with it. I love the story of the elf on the Shelf in case you have not hear about the Elf on The Shelf below you will find some background information on what the elf is all about.

The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition

The poetic story dictates that the elf's main priority around the family's household is to keep watch over the children's behavior during the day and return to the North Pole overnight to report their behavior to Santa Claus, detailing any acts of obedience or misdeeds performed by a child during that particular day, returning home by the following morning. Starting from the day following Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve, the elf remains with its family to ensure that they behave properly throughout the holidays. However, the top policy regarding the Elf on the Shelf is to refrain from touching the creature, as doing so could permanently erase any Christmas magic with which the elf had been bestowed upon being named by the family. It is no longer capable of fulfilling its duties of recounting the events of the day to Santa Claus, cautioning that he may or may not learn about a child's behavior should the Elf on the Shelf be stripped of its holiday enchantment. Every day, the elf's position changes, providing the family with the responsibility of locating its current perch before its departure for the year on Christmas Eve.

These very sought after elfs are not always easy to come by, so if you are looking to find a location where you can get your child his or her very own elf on the shelf, I am happy to be able to relay the information that Glad Tidings the Christmas Shoppe in St. Peter's has just received a shipment  in.

"THE ELF ON THE SHELF" has arrived in stock today!!!!!! Along with the Elf Kit with boy or Girl Elf they also have a sweater for the boy a skirt and a tutu for the girl elf.
New this year is a kit with a child,s cooks hat and apron and one for the elf also DVD with the elf story. Shop early while quantities last
