OTTAWA - Spending on tourism in Canada rose 1.5 per cent in the third quarter, its fifth straight quarterly increase.

Statistics Canada reports Canadians' spending on tourism in Canada continued to trend upward, while spending by international visitors rose after dropping in the second quarter.

The agency says tourism spending has fully recovered from the year-long downturn that began in the third quarter of 2008.

It stood 2.6 per cent higher in the third quarter than it was before the decline began.

Canadians' spending on tourism in Canada increased for the fifth straight quarter, advancing 1.6 per cent from the second quarter.

Spending by international visitors to Canada increased 1.3 per cent in the third quarter, after a 0.4 per cent decline in the second quarter.

Travel was up from both the United States and overseas countries.

Tourism employment rose 0.7 per cent, boosted by strong job gains in the accommodation industry and travel services.

  1. Ottawa has been described as one of the most beautiful capitals in the world. Less than an hour's drive from the American border, Ottawa enjoys the attributes of a major centre for the visual and performing arts, as well as other big city attractions
