Jacques, Albert and Micheline of Velo, as they head out towards Dundee on Saturday July 23rd
Pictures from the Sunday cycle event in Arichat
Velo had two cycling events over the weekend of July 23rd and 24th. I met up with Jacques and Micheline and Albert of Velo on Saturday in the Sampsonville area as they began their tour of the Cape George/ Dundee loop returning to St. Peter’s via Grande Anse, a distance of 65km. The weather was good and they were looking forward to the ride and to the event on Sunday in Arichat for Bicycle Tour of Isle Madame. PS the picture I took of Jacques was taken just infront of Freeman Sampson's house, where I locked me keys in the car, always make sure to take your keys out of the car before taking a picture of Jacques. And thank you Vangie for letting me call Gary to bring over my spare key.
Sunday July 24th, turned out to be a very nice day for the Tour of Isle Madame a group of between 30 and 40 cyclists turned out to do the route. The group left from Dooley’s Pharmacy Parking lot at approximately 9am to start their journey. There were two lengths for the tour, cyclists could pick between the 20 km or the 40 km runs. Following the tour a spectacular Seafood Chowder lunch was served andcyclists were treated to some great local entertainment. It was quite a day for the Velo group and the enthusiasm is definitely starting togrow with Jacques and Micheline signing up new members for the club and even signing up one excited cyclist for next years Across the Highland event. If you enjoy cycling and would like to become a member of a cycling club then you should definitely go to the Velo web site velocapebreton.ca and sign up to become a member. There are lots of events for cyclists to take part in and it is such a great way to stay physically active.

Rainy Day Visit to La Picasse's Marine Research Centre
One of the questions I get asked a lot at the Visitor Center by mom and dads visiting the area, is what can you do with children on rainy days? Well today was rainy, so I headed over to Petit de Grat with my granddaughter to check out the Marine Centre at La Picasse. My granddaughter had a ball, when we first entered the centre Grace checked out the touch tank to see what she could see. Then she strolled by the six aquariums which housed various types of fish and sea life. Next we visited with marine staff member Simone who showed us around the compound. We saw lobsters that were a little different, one that was a little off colour because of a deficiency of some sort and another lobster that had a deformed claw. Next we checked out the holding tank which held 10 year old lobsters that were laying eggs. Then it was off to see some 3 year old lobsters which were just being place in their new holding facility. They were no larger than 4 inches in length, and had just molted their shell. My granddaughter got to touch the soft new shell of the lobster; which she found very interesting. We also had the opportunity to see the shells that the little lobsters had just shed it was amazing, it looked like they had just slipped out of their suit, the shell was totally in tack. We thanked Simone for taking the time to show us the Center and headed back home.
Tourism in Richmond County
July has been an incredible month for recognition and accolades for Cape Breton Island. This is great news for Destination Cape Breton Association and the island's tourism industry. Not only did the Bras d'Or Lake receive recognition by the United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a Biosphere Reserve, but Cape Breton has received top grades by Travel + Leisure magazine, which names Cape Breton #1 Island Destination in Continental US and Canada; #3 in the World! This is the third time the island has received this special award, beating out Vancouver Island and Nantucket this year for the coveted spot. That makes it even more meaningful, as it is not just a flash in the pan, because the island has been able to maintain the requirements necessary to qualify for this award. Mary Tulle, CEO of DCBA, travelled to Los Angeles to accept the award. On Friday DCBA, in partnership with the Municipality of Richmond, hosted a county-wide party to celebrate Cape Breton's Achievements. Representatives from the tourism and entertainment industries, the municipality, community groups, as well as proud Cape Breton residents and visitors turned out to celebrate at the United Church Hall in St. Peter's. It was definitely a Cape Breton party with entertainers generously donating their talent for the afternoon event. Artisans and local gift shops from around Richmond set up a display to showcase what visitors are able to fine during their visit to the area. St. Peter's was not the only area to celebrate Cape Breton Island's fame. There were simultaneous parties held in Sydney, Baddeck, Margaree and Port Hawkesbury; showcasing what Cape Breton has to offer.
Also this month, Ms. Tulle and tourism representatives of Destination Cape Breton Association, attended an open house at DCBA’s new information kiosk located on the Halifax Waterfront. The open house offered guests a glimpse at the experiences that await them on the island, where every turn in the road leads to a new adventure. This is another first for Cape Breton as it is the first regional destination in Nova Scotia to have a presence on the Halifax Waterfront. DCBA, in partnership with Ambassatours, now has an information outlet which will give staff the capability of reaching thousands of visitors at the Halifax waterfront. It has been estimated as many as 58% of tourists to Nova Scotia go through the Halifax waterfront area. Members from DCBA were on hand to speak with members of the industry as well about their 2011 plans for attracting visitors to the island with the introduction of the Cape Breton themed motor coach fleets. The motor coaches will travel in Canada and along the entire Eastern seaboard showcasing Cape Breton on beautifully designed murals which are sure to draw lots of positive attention.

Visitors from Sydney, Australia paid our fair village of St. Peter’s a call this past week. The mother and daughter duo Shona and Siobhan Papalia were in St. Peter’s to meet Rosemary and Mac MacIsaac and pay a visit to MacIsaac Kiltmakers. Although this was the first time that the Papalias and the MacIsaacs had met face to face it was not the first time that the foursome had been in touch with each other. Rosemary MacIsaac, who is one of the best kiltmakers in Canada, has been making kilts for Siobhan since 2000 and corresponding with the Australian family over the internet. Siobhan, who starting dancing when she was twelve years of age and has risen through the ranks as an award winning highland dancer in her own country, was invited to perform at the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo in Halifax this year. They decided to make a stop over in Cape Breton and meet the MacIsaacs in person. The Halifax Tattoo was not Siobhan’s first experience with a performance of this caliber. She has performed numerious events in Australia as well as two other tattoos in Edinburg. Siobhan confided to me that the tattoo was not her only incentive for making her first trip to Canada. It was also her wish that she meet with Rosemary and together come up with a specially designed tartan for a new kilt she planned to order during her time here. This kilt will be worn by Siobhan at the Champion of Champions Competition which will be held in Hobart Tasmania in April of 2012. The competition, which is a major event for dancers, will have 400 competitors for the coveted recognition as thee best in their division over all. The trip to Canada for the Australia duo was a mix of business and pleasure as they wanted to see as much of the attractions and scenery as possible before heading back home. Siobhan assured me that when she receives the brand new creation by Rosemary that she will send us a photo.
St. Peter’s is where the visitors will definitely want to be on July 21st. It is going to be hard to choose what event to take in: Cape Breton’s best guitar player, JP Cormier will take to the stage with the very talented Elliot Brothers at the St. Peter’s Lions Hall starting at 8pm. Also on July 21st the Bras d’Or Lakes Inn Ceilidh will take place from 7-9pm featuring Richmond’s own Leona Burkey-Smith, McKayla MacNeil and the Island Steppers. The Ceilidh will be followed by the Kitchen Racket until 11pm. And the concert by the Sea will take place at the St. Peter’s Bandshell starting at 6:30pm. What an evening of jam packed entertainment. Come, listen and experience our music.

Mary Tulle, CEO of DCBA, will travel to Los Angeles to accept the award.
On the local scene: a Sandcastle Competition takes place at Point Michaud on July 16th from 1-5pm. July 21st JP Cormier and the Elliot Brothers takes the stage at the St. Peter’s Lions Hall at 8pm, tickets are $15.00. July 21st the Bras d’Or Lakes Inn Ceilidh, featuring excellent entertainers will take place from 7-9pm followed by the Kitchen Racket until 11pm.

Tourism in Richmond County
World class chefs will be coming to Cape Breton Island to take part in one of the most exciting events in dining that Cape Breton has ever experienced. 10 super chefs from all over the world will descend on Cape Breton to share their knowledge and experience with 10 top notch Cape Breton Chefs and 10 Junior Chefs from all over Canada. Each grouping, made up of an experienced local chef, a promising junior chef and the international representative, will create a menu that will surpass your wildest imagination. Each dish will have ingredients native to Cape Breton presented as never before to provide a feast fit for nobility and served on tables across the island at some of the most unique venues that will delight the pallet, in settings that highlight our history and while hearing some of our best traditional entertainment all rolled in to an experience you will never forget.
Richmond County is proud to have the St. Peter’s National Historic Site named as one of the locations where a venue will be set up which will give guests the opportunity to sample the cuisine of this extraordinary experience. The Richmond event will take place on August 30th and is being classed as the Ultimate Picnic with tickets at $65.00 per person, it will run from 7pm until 10:30pm. Tickets went on sale June 20th, go to rightsomegood.ca for details.
What a backdrop this area will make, as the feast is served up from the sea and prepared by Chef Javier Vargas Guimaray of Peru, one of the finest chefs and assisted by our best local and Jr. chefs, guests can walk along the canal, where the water flows between the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the magnificent Bras d’Or Lakes on the other which just happens to be the location of Nicolas Denys settlement of 1650. As guests take their seats to enjoy a sumptuous three course meal, created with ingredients such as mackerel, snow crab, oysters, pork, wild berries and corn, the sun will be slowly slipping down under the horizon. One could almost imagine the presents of Monsieur Denys standing at the head of the table and tipping his hat to this master of culinary excellence. What could be more perfect. Those lucky enough to partake in this adventure are in for a treat of a lifetime.
Richmond is very proud that from all the chefs that entered the competition from all over Cape Breton, two excellent Chefs were chosen from this area. Each chief had to submit an original receipt using ingredients from Cape Breton. Adam Brenner, Chef at the Bras d’Or Lakes Inn in St. Peter’s, submitted an original and inventive take on Surf n’ Turf that fused charred sweet corn salsa with blackberry gastrique to create something uniquely different which won him a place on this noteworthy team. As well Richmond native Dillon Carter, Chef at the MacDonald Country Inn in St. Peter’s, submitted a very unusual dish. Have you ever dabbled with the idea of adding lobster to your cake recipe? Well Dillon did and his creation won him a coveted spot on the foodie team. As well as these two fine chefs from our area four Jr. Chefs were chosen from NSCC , Brandy Currie, Katie Wall, Martha MacDonald and Justin Yap. They will fill out the roster of 10 Jr. Chefs who were chosen from all over Canada, who will assist with preparations.
Besides the St. Peter’s National Historic Site these foodie adventures will also take place at the Judique Community Center, Little River Harbour, Orangedale Train Station, Ingonish Beach, the Gaelic College, Cape Breton Miners Museum, Cruise ship Pavilion/Big Fiddle, The Lakes Golf Club and Fortress Louisbourg. These foodie adventures will run between August 25th and September 4th.
It seems only fitting that St. Peter's be one of the locations chosen to hold this excellent adventure in dining, since one of the best gourmet restaurants in Cape Breton the Bras d'Or Lakes Inn is located over looking the St. Peter's Canal. Visitors coming to Cape Breton make a point to stop in at the Inn to taste creations of Chef Jean Pierre Gillet, which equals that of the finest chefs anywhere.

MacIsaac Kilts a Sought After Item for Australia
From left: Shona and Siobahn Papalia, Rosemary and Mac MacIsaac
Mother and daughter duo Shona and Siobhan Papalia from Sydney Australia paid our fair village of St. Peter’s a visit this week. The Papalias were in St. Siobhan, who starting dancing when she was twelve years of age and has risen through the ranks as an award winning highland dancer in her own country, was invited to perform at the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo in Halifax this year and decided to make a stop over in Cape Breton and meet the MacIsaacs in person. The Halifax Tattoo was not Siobhan’s first experience with a performance of this caliber. She has performed numerous events in Australia as well as two other tattoos in Edinburg.

Cape Breton Receives Top Rank as an Island Destination
This is absolutely Great! As Cape Bretoners we already know that Cape Breton Island is spectacular, we hear it all the time from visitors coming to our shores. As a visitor counsellor I hear stories from visitors everyday, about the scenery, the views, the Bras d'Or Lakes and the Highlands, the Fortress of Louisbourg, our ceilidhs and history so I know just how lucky we are to live on this marvelous island. But to see it receive credibility as number 1 island to visit in Continental US and Canada and Number 3 Island in the World, from the Travel and Leisure Magazine Readers World's Best Awards, just makes a person want to hold their head up just a little higher.
I just received this information from Lou Leith of Destination Cape Breton Association about the recognition and I just had to pass it along.
Once again Cape Breton is basking in the glow of the Travel and Leisure Magazine Readers World’s Best Awards!!! Number one in Continental US and Canada and........................
Number 3 Island in the World!!!
None of this would be possible without Cape Breton’s Tourism Operators and Cape Bretoners themselves!!!!

Bras d'Or Lake Designated as UNESCO Biosphere Reserve
Another major goal has been reached for Cape Breton!!! The Canadian Commission for UNESCO has just sent out this Press Release and since it is such important news I want to pass it along to everyone.
Bras d'Or Lake is designated a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.
Ottawa, June 30, 2011. Canada welcomes its 16th Biosphere Reserve, as Bras d'Or Lake, Nova Scotia, is designated a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO ( the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). Biosphere Reserves are living laboratories of sustainable development, where local communities choose to take the challenge to protect biodiversity while fostering economic and social development. The World Network of Biosphere Reserves now numbers 580 sites in 114 countries.
This new Biosphere Reserve includes the complete watershed of Bras d'Or Lake, a salt-water estuary that constitutes a true inland sea. This estuary has unique oceanographic and biological characteristics as it contains both species typical of Arctic waters and of warm subtropical oceans, living within a few hundred meters of one another. UNESCO's designation of this site is the result of a highly collaborative process that started in 2005, involving First Nation Representatives, provincial and federal government agency, academics, and the nearly 14,000 citizens of the region. This process led to the development of a comprehensive management plan for the lake, to the creation of new jobs and encouraging business opportunities, while respecting the principles of sustainable development.

ACROSS THE HIGHLANDS MTB CHALLENGE 2011
Looks like it is going to be another great year for Across the Highlands MTB Challenge. This year the event takes place in Whycocomagh and bring all cyclists to the top of Skye Mountain, altitude 260 m and in the back roads south of Lake Ainslie, the long loop ends after the climb to the top of Lewis and the exciting descent of the Whycocomagh mountain road, altitude 270m leading to the finish line.
The challenge will cover 3 divisions, the 20km and 40km adventures and the Marathon 50km. As of June 26th, Velo organizer Jacques Cote reports that 58 participants have registered for this year’s event. Cyclists will be coming to the Cape Breton from as far away as Pritchard, BC and Yellowknife in the Yukon. This is great news for Velo as well as for tourism operators in Cape Breton. An event such as this is always a boost for the local economy.
As always, Velo organizers and volunteers have worked very hard to present another high quality event for Saturday July 16th. Organizers have everything ready for the participants; maps, GPS instructions will be placed in the kit bags which will given out from 6-9pm on the evening of the 15th at the Whycocomagh Fire Hall. The courses will be well marked and volunteers will be located along the routes as well as at the pit stops and check points to make sure the event is a safe and fun filled event. In an event like this participants travel at their own rate, so if they want to push themselves they can or they can just set their own pace and enjoy the track, there is no first second or third or even last place finishers as anyone who enters this event is already a winner for taking the challenge. At the end of the day, everyone revels in the fact that they have conquered their goal of finishing their course and can be proud of their accomplishment. For those travelling in for the event, there are lots of accommodations available in the area from camping to motels and B&B and The Bear on The Lake Guest House, but make sure to book early. There are also lots of events to take in while in the area as the Whycocomagh Summer Festival will be taking place from July 11 to 17 this year, so come a little early and enjoy such events as a ceilidh, take in a traditional milling frolic, dust of your dancing shoes and take in one of the lively dances. There will also be canoe races, ball, hockey, soccer tournaments, street fair, street parade and concert, lots to do before and after the challenge. Jacques and Micheline do an excellent job of scouting out the courses and making sure routes are safe and exciting. This is bound to be another great event.

A Whale of a Tail or Two
If you are looking for an experience that will surpass your expectations then you will definitely want to head up to the Cabot Trail and book a Whale Tour. This season has been exceptional for whale sightings, it is unusual to see all the varieties of whales come in at the same time. Operators of Wesley’s Whale Watch out of Cheticamp and Pleasant Bay reported that in May and June it was not unusual to go out on the boat and see all four types of whales and dolphins in the same area, just amazing. Oshan Whale Watch operators located in Bay St. Lawrence reported Monday, that they have been seeing Pilot, Fin, Minke and Humpback Whales as well as dolphins while out on the tour in the Bay St. Lawrence area. Can you imagine anything more exciting than seeing these amazing creatures as their massive fins rise up out of the waves , close enough for you to get an incredible picture to show the folks back home.

View of Richmond
Summer is here and we are starting to see visitors from all over Canada and some from the US. With school coming to a close for the season, we will see an increase in family traffic. Richmond County is offering these visitors a lot of extras this year, including three special experiences that are available this year. One has been around for a year, and two are new on the block. All three are great and are offering the visitor what they have been asking for. I can hardly wait to get feedback from them. These experiences offer the visitor a chance to see how a working sheep farm operates, from the shearing of the wool, to feeding some of the other species that also live at the farm. The second experience is a guided walking and driving tour around the beautiful and historic island of Isle Madame to see the lighthouses. There will be two tours offered on Thursdays throughout the summer; a four hour morning tour and a two hour afternoon tour. Third we have a sailing experience where visitors can set sail for a day trip with up to 6 passengers aboard the yacht the Misty Cat. Take a turn at the helm, do some fishing, or stop and take a dip in the soothing waters of Bras d’Or Lake. All three sound great.
Two major events Richmond has planned for this summer are the 8th Annual Point Michaud Surf Classic & Expo scheduled for August 26th to 28th and the 1st ever Cape Breton Paddlefest scheduled for September 16 to 18th. More information can be gotten on these great new experiences by going to www.capebretonheritagecoast.com.
Visitors have always enjoyed our traditional music, and this summer Richmond has lots to offer. The Thursday Night Ceilidhs and Kitchen Racket are at the Bras d’Or Lakes Inn starting on July 7th, with Krysta MacKinnon entertaining at the Inn from Sunday through Wednesday from 7 to 11pm. The Dundee Resort will be featuring entertainer Jason Williams from Monday to Friday with a guest entertainer taking the stage on Saturday and Sunday. The Concert by the Sea series will be back at the band stand for another season as will be the Family Square Dances at the United Church Hall in St. Peter’s on Monday nights.
