While travelling on vacation, one of the best ways to get a feel for the way of life of an area is to join in the local events. I think you would really enjoy the festival held every year in Port Hawkesbury. This festival has lots to offer for the whole family, food, music and entertainment and a parade and fireworks thrown in for your enjoyment. So here is a schedule of events I hope you come and that the opportunity to share this community experience.
FESTIVAL OF THE STRAIT - 2011
JULY 6TH TO JULY 10TH
July 6th -Princess Pageant-6:30pm at Shannon Studio in the Port Hawkesbury
Civic Centre. Emceed by 1015 The Hawk’s Kelly Atchison. Free admission.
July 7th
11am to noon - Story Hour in the SAERC Library. For ages 5 to 12.
Snacks provided. Please pre-register at 625-2729. Sponsored by Eastern
Counties Regional Library.
4-6pm - Chowder Supper at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 43 Port
Hawkesbury. Chowder, roll, tea or coffee and old fashioned bread
pudding with sauce, $8 per person.
6-8pm - Quad County Showcase on Granville Green. Featuring four
local bands/entertainers. Festival crew selling hot dogs. Princesses
will be introduced on-stage.
8-10pm - Pre-Teen Dance at the Evergreen Club. Open to grades 3-6.
$2 admission. Pop & water will be sold.
July 8th
9-11am - Road Hockey Tournament at the basketball courts behind
SAERC. Championship game scheduled for 3pm. Pre-registration required
at 625-5748 or 631-1130. 2 age divisions, up to age 14 welcome.
11AM TO NOON - Story Hour in the SAERC Library. For ages 5 to 12.
Snacks provided. Please pre-register at 625-2729. Sponsored by Eastern
Counties Regional Library.
1-2:30pm - Free Swim & BBQ. Swim at the SAERC Pool. Followed by
free hot dogs and pop.
11am to 1:30pm - Cold Plate Lunch at The Evergreen Club, Port
Hawkesbury. $10 per plate, includes dessert. Hosted by the 1st Port
Hawkesbury Girl Guides.
1 to 3pm - Kids Events on the Port Hawkesbury Recreation Grounds.
Beach ball volleyball, musical hoops, water toss, sack races, candy
jar, limbo and more.
Noon-3pm - Seniors Tea in the Bear Head Conference Room of the Port
Hawkesbury Civic Center. Free for seniors; RSVP’s accepted at
625-0544. Entertainment by Carl MacKeigan. Sponsored by Port
Hawkesbury Parks & Recreation.
6pm - 5 Card Dash at the Port Hawkesbury Horse Track. Licensed bar available.
Adult Pub – 10pm to 2am, under the Tent on the Port Hawkesbury
Recreation Grounds. $15 admission; id’s requested. Music by Matt
Minglewood, with opening act Nancy MacDougall.
July 9th
9am - 5 & 10 K Fun Run from the Port Hawkesbury Recreation Grounds.
Registrations accepted on race day. Medals awarded in 10 categories.
Sponsored by Port Hawkesbury Parks & Recreation and The Running Room.

9am - Dan Willie Memorial Ball Tournament in support of Strait Area Minor

Grounds. Sponsored by the Knights of Columbus.
10am - Children’s Parade at the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home. Show off
your decorated bike, wagon or stroller. Ribbons for all participants.

10am-2pm - Kids Events on the Port Hawkesbury Recreation Grounds. 3
Bounce-a-ramas, Crazy Cube, fish pond, face painting & tattoos, tons
of games with prizes, including Candy Jar, Bingo, Candy Wheel, Sucker
Pull and Carnival games. See Dora & Spongebob at the Festival!
Food! Hot Dogs, Sausages, pop, water, will be sold on site.
2:30pm-Afternoon Pub & Washer Toss Tournament under the tent on the
Recreation Grounds. Music by “The Fourth Well”. 19 and over only. Free
admission. BBQ on site.
4pm - Razzmatazz SAERC Auditorium. $5 for tickets. Advance tickets
recommended. Phone 631-0959
10pm-2am - Adult Pub under the tent on the Port Hawkesbury
Recreation Grounds. $10 admission; id’s requested. Music by” Merimac”.
July 10th
11am - The Amazing Race. Registrations accepted up to July 7th. Cash
prize for the winning team. Phone 625-5636 to register.
Track & Field Event – Starts at 9am with registration at the Field
near Summit Park. Ages 5 to 15. Prizes awarded.
11am-Bike Rodeo & Open House at the Port Hawkesbury Fire Hall. Rain
or Shine. All welcome.
1:30pm - Festival Street Parade. Starting from the former NSCC Parking
Lot (lower Civic Centre parking area), view the parade on the
following streets: McSween, MacQuarrie Drive, Reynolds, Reeves, Old
Sydney Road & Granville Street.
Following the parade, head to the Port Hawkesbury Waterfront for these events:
2:30pm - Michael Goodick Memorial War Canoe Challenge. Teams can
register at 625-0951 or festival.strait@gmail.com
2:30pm - Kids Events. Two bounce-a-ramas, chalk drawing, rock skipping and more.
2:30pm - Shopping Extravaganza and throughout afternoon. Scentsy,
Heels on Wheels, Arbonne and more! Venders & Yard Salers welcome. No

BBQ – hot dogs, sausages, pop and water will be sold.
Granville Green Outdoor Concert Series – 6:45pm. Jill Barber with
special guest Mo Kennedy.
