There are all kinds of exciting events planned for Cape Breton Island this summer and one of these events is Velo's Across the Highland MTB Challenge. The 7th Edition of the race will take place in St. Peter’s on July 17th and 18th.
This unique event has a 60km marathon suited for more advanced riders and the 25km adventure ride suited more for the moderate to easy circuit cyclist. Riders 16 to 18 years of age who intend to enter the challenge must be accompanied by a parent at all times. Riders can choose between a 25km or 60 km course through the beautiful Pringle's and Sporting Mountain areas. The event head quarters will be located at the St. Peter’s Lions Hall, and riders are recommended to be on site at least 1 hour before start time. They can then pick up their ride kit containing their map, cue sheet and bike plaque.
Saturday, at 9:30am the group will begin with a 2.5km warm up ride around the beautiful Village of St. Peter’s before they head out to do a gradual climb of nearly 200 meters to the top of Pringle’s Mountain. At this point the groups will divide up for the short and longer km challenge. Divisions will enjoy four to six hours of spectacular landscapes and lots of fun on trails which will test their ability and levels of skill. The routes are well signed and there will be regular pit stops where workers will be on hand with food and refreshments and as well patrollers will be stationed at strategic locations to direct group members and provide emergency help if needed.
The climb to the top of Pringle's Mountain, the thrilling descent and unforgettable ride along the amazing Bras d’Or Lakes is breath taking, and the assent to the peak of Sporting Mountain are the highlights of this years challenge.
